After modern-day pirates murder his best friend, an American ex-Marine captains a fighting ship to wreak revenge.

A sexy, cinematic action-thriller in the tradition of Lee Child and Casino Royale.

Ryan Kelley is a former Marine who’s drifted into knocking around Southeast Asia as a merchant seaman. His best friend is murdered by King Pirate, leader of the biggest criminal organization currently stalking the Malacca Strait.

Kelley swears revenge. He hunts down one of King Pirate’s lieutenants, but swiftly realizes he’ll never get far without help. Kelley goes to Cuchulain, the bizarre leader of the IPC, a law enforcement agency dedicated to fighting piracy. Kelley almost immediately begins an affair with Cuchulain’s lead investigator, the beautiful Russian ex-pat, Anastasia.

But Kelley can’t tolerate working in an office and taking orders. He quits to fight King Pirate alone. Cuchulain makes Kelley an interesting offer if Kelley agrees to become a modern-day privateer – a pirate of pirates – Cuchulain will fund the expedition. Though he has his suspicions, Kelley agrees.

Kelley buys a ship, attracts a crew of rogues and arms them with black market weapons. He takes King Pirate by surprise, raiding pirate ships on the high seas. The mission is almost too successful; King Pirate’s lieutenants quickly come after Kelley and his men.

Kelley digs into King Pirate’s organization, and realizes that the mysterious criminal’s plans are vastly farther-reaching than just hijacking ships, and his influence in government is far deeper than Kelley imagined. Reaching even into the halls of the IPC…

Overall I enjoyed this story. It was fast paced and had plenty of hard hitting, gritty action. The hand to hand fight scenes are especially detailed and generally well written. Additionally, the story is set in an exotic locale and it features a wide range of diverse characters.

However, despite the comparison made in the product description, this is not quite on the level with authors like Lee Child. I don't mean that as an offense, however, as I consider Mr. Child to be one of the best writers of action thrillers around today. Anyway, despite having some really positive points, there were a few things about this story that I wasn't crazy about.

This story needs a proofreader. I found multiple cases where words were missing and others where the wrong word was used. Although I did try to ignore them since I was otherwise enjoying the read, they were frequent enough to take me out of the story and make me realize I wasn't reading a book published by a major publisher.

Additionally, from time to time I found myself rolling my eyes at the relationship between our protagonist Ryan Kelley and his love interest Anastasia. The dynamic between them is sexually awkward at first (and reads like a high school student's fantasy) and after they get together it's all "My love, this" and "My love, that." Although their relationship was crucial to the story it was my least favorite part of the book.

The ending was good and satisfying, but I would have preferred a more climactic resolution. Most readers will figure out the big reveal before it happens and may find the final pages to be a little too straight forward... and almost a little too easy for our protagonist.

Despite any complaints I did enjoy this story and read it through to its end. Readers who have already read all of Lee Child's Jack Reacher series (and Barry Eisler's John Rain series) should find something to like in this action adventure thriller (even if its just not quite on the same level, it's still pretty entertaining.)

Recommended to fans of violent action thrillers, especially those interested in modern piracy.

Good read with lots of twists and turns. Good to read a book without figuring out the who's who in the first 100 pages. Good characters full of human flaws. Another part of the world that most of us are unfamiliar with.
Exciting and flows well. The story line keeps the reader going to the next page. Some twists and turns in the story line but well adapted.
I enjoyed this read even with all the typos and grammatical errors. New twist to old pirate tales. There is a big wide
ocean waiting for Kelly's next adventure.......hint hint.
If you enjoyed the movie Capt Phillips you might enjoy this story of revenge on the modern day pirates sailing the seas of Africa and the south pacific. this was one of those books that keeps you guess till the end which mean you wont put it down until your done
First off, I must say that I couldn't finish the book. Why? The book is riddled with choppy, fragmented sentences like this one

"Kelley could tell that, behind the placid Malaysian exterior, Han was ready to go ape s***. He liked it that way. Angry men didn't think. They reacted. To what Kelley did or said. That made him in control." (A few pages into chapter 1. Don't know the page number as it's on my .)

and

"He stared at it for a long moment. The ear was pierced. A steel Jolly Roger. Both the ear and the earring belonged to Brody. From the jagged cuts, it looked like whoever had removed the ear needed three or four tries. Or maybe he was just taking his time. For the fun of it." (This is from the opening page of Chapter 1.)

I'm curious to know how Kelley knew instantly that the ear belonged to his friend. The earring makes an easier connection for the reader, but the EAR? Did Kelley study Brody's body parts that intensely? How in the world does he know this?

The head of the agency who talks only through a speaker & has "eyes" all over the building is a little too much. The author tells us he has a thick Irish accent, yet writes in straightforward English, with notes where words sound different due to his accent. Why not just write the accent into the book instead of sidebars telling us how he sounds?

Kelley's crush on/instant attraction to Anastasia is just too much. For someone the author states is nearly always on guard, & yet is still surprised to find a woman on the other side of the door, that the man he meets isn't actually the director/head of the agency... It was the last straw. I stopped reading at the end of the first chapter.

I would love to finish reading this, but only if the author fixes the mistakes.
Well I did finish it. Very implausible to say the least, One super bad dude vs. everyone else. So few characters makes it easy to determine the turncoat, and the significant other is a deadly, drop dead gorgeous super lover that you're not supposed to be sure of. Way over the top but as I stated, I did read through the whole thing. Quite a few typos and the writing is frequently staccato style-short choppy sentences that don't always make sense.
Some of the reviews complain about the writing prose and language (jeesh...ever watch a R rated movie?)...but I did not find that a problem and found it right to the point. Few misspellings & typos here and there but hey...downloaded it for free. Fairly fast paced with a high testosterone lead character Ryan Kelly (that has 9 lives) out for revenge. It kept my interest thru to the end and I kept wondering...so when is the movie coming out with author Tom Stern maybe peddling it to Hollywood? Overall a guys adventure read with twists and turns.
